He was one of my best friends and a very competitive scholar in his own right, but his big concern was building community.  I used to argue with him that we can&#039;t predict who will stay or go in advance, and that our job is to make our department the kind of place people might want to stay.  I never convinced him.

The long and short of it is that he got an offer and left himself!]]></description>
