He was one of my best friends and a very competitive scholar in his own right, but his big concern was building community. I used to argue with him that we can’t predict who will stay or go in advance, and that our job is to make our department the kind of place people might want to stay. I never convinced him.

The long and short of it is that he got an offer and left himself!
